International Optometrist of the Year Award 2019

On October 2, as part of the inauguration of the 2019–2020 academic year, the Faculty of Optics and Optometry of Terrassa awarded Professor Joanne Wood the International Optometrist of the Year Award, 2019 edition.

During the event, held in the monumental complex of the Sant Pere Churches in Terrassa, one of the jewels of Romanesque architecture (9th–12th century), Professor Joanne Wood delivered the inaugural lecture, aimed especially at first-year FOOT students, encouraging them to excel academically and personally, and to look beyond books to achieve clinical expertise and a balanced life philosophy.

The Clinical Activity logbook was also presented to second-year students, serving as documentation of the patients these students will have the opportunity to interact with throughout their degree.

Joanne Wood

Professor School of Optometry and Vision Science, Queensland University of Technology (Australia)

Director of Optometry Research and leader of the Visual Improvement Division at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation. She has received nearly 20 international awards, including an Honorary Doctorate from Aston University.

Professor Joanne Wood is a professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane (Australia). She graduated in Optometry from Aston University (Birmingham) and later completed her PhD at the same university. She undertook research at Oxford and as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Queensland University of Technology. Her main research interests include vision, aging, and driving.

Professor Wood is internationally recognized for translating research findings into road safety policies and healthcare practice, advising organizations and professionals on traffic regulations and standards for obtaining driving licenses.
